Place Borders around Paragraphs

In Word, you can make paragraphs stand out by placing a border around them. You can use the Borders and Shading dialog box or you can use the Borders gallery. When you click the down-arrow next to the Borders button on the Home tab, Word presents a gallery of border options. To create a border, click the option you want.

Border Options
Border Option Function
Bottom Border Places a border below a paragraph
Top Border Places a border above a paragraph
Left Border Places a border on the left side of the selected paragraphs
Right Border Places a border on the right side of selected paragraphs
No Border Removes all borders
Outside Border Places a border on the top, bottom, left, and right of the selected paragraphs
Horizontal Line Places a horizontal line in your document
Note: Some options are not explained here because they generally do not apply to paragraphs.

To make your document look professionally produced, Word provides header, footer, cover page, and text box designs that complement each other. For example, you can add a matching cover page, header, and sidebar. Click Insert and then choose the elements you want from the different galleries.

  1. Select the paragraphs you want to place a border around.
  2. Choose the Home tab.
  3. Click the down-arrow next to the Borders button in the Paragraph group and then click the type of border you want. Word places borders around your paragraphs.

Can I change the width, color, and alignment of a horizontal line?

You can change the width, color, and alignment of a horizontal line by changing the format. Click the horizontal line you want to change, then right-click. A menu appears. Click Format Horizontal Line. The Format Horizontal Line dialog box opens. Use the Measure In field to select whether you want to use Percent or Inches to set the line width. Use the Width field to enter the width. Use the Height field to enter the height of the line in points. Check the Use Solid Color box if you want to change the color, then click the down-arrow next to the Color field and select a color. Click Left, Center, or Right to set the alignment. Click OK. Word formats the line.
