Bold, Italicize, and Underline
When creating a document, you may want to emphasize particular words or phrases by bolding, underlining, or italicizing. Also, certain grammatical constructs require that you bold, underline, or italicize. For example, you italicize the title of a book. With Word, you can apply any combination of formats to text. For example, you can bold and underline, bold and italicize, or italicize, underline, and bold.
Word offers several types of underlines, including single, double, thick, dotted, dashed, dot-dash, wave, and words only. Many of these options appear when you click the down-arrow next to the Underline button. Others are available only through the Font dialog box, which you access by clicking the dialog box launcher in the Font group.
Bold
- Select the text you want to bold. Word highlights the text.
- Choose the Home tab.
- Click the Bold button in the Font group. Word bolds the text you selected.
Note: To remove the bold, select the text and then click the Bold button again.
- Click in the text area. The highlighting disappears.
Italicize
- Select the text you want to italicize. Word highlights the text.
- Choose the Home tab.
- Click the Italic button in the Font group. Word italicizes your text.
Note: To remove the italic, select the text and then click the Italic button again.
- Click in the text area. The highlighting disappears.
Underline
- Select the text you want to underline. Word highlights the text.
- Choose the Home tab.
- Click the down-arrow next to the Underline button .
- Click to choose the type of underline you want.
Note: To remove the underlining, select the text and then click the Underline button again.
- Click in the text area. The highlighting disappears.
